Half an hour later, the path widened out in a familiar way.

“Just ahead is the tanglefoot tree,” I said.

“We’ll let you go first,” Io said.

“Terrible suggestion on any normal day,” McHayden said. “However, since you’re the only one who has encountered it before, that’s probably wise.”

“Relax,” Punkin said. “Willard and I are buddies now.”

I walked until I spied the weeping branches of the willow. They rustled despite the lack of wind right then.

“Willard, it’s me and Punkin again. We came to see Brynmor.”

The tree rustled again, shaking in a way that seemed menacing. Punkin darted into the brush, well away from the willow tree.

“We were here yesterday. You remember me, right?” I hoped the tree remembered.

More shaking.

“That doesn’t seem like a happy conversation on his end,” Io said.

“Ebrel,” Punkin called from ahead. “You need to get up here.”

“Why?” I asked, a knot suddenly developing in my gut.

“That goblin fellow is dead.”

“Brynmor? Where?”

“In the clearing, just past the tree’s reach.”

“Was it Willard? Did he turn on Brynmor?”

“No, you’ll have to come look.”

I started cursing. Io looked at me, an eyebrow raised.

“You didn’t get to spend time on Barti’s ship with a bunch of sailors.” I said. “Willard, if you want me to help Brynmor, let us through.”

The tree shook again.

“He’s crying,” Io said. “It’s not a threat. The tree is just mourning.”

“I hope you’re right,” I said and stepped forward. “You two stay back here to get me out in case you’re wrong.”

I stepped within reach of the willow branches. They rubbed against me as I slid under them, but they didn’t grab. A few steps later, I emerged on the far side.

“I’m through,” I called. “Come along. This isn’t pretty.”

Brynmor’s body lay before me, face down on the soil, his walking stick off to the side. Blood stained his dirty clothing.

I stepped carefully around his body and glanced around. His ghost should be around somewhere.

“Oh my,” Io said when he came into the clearing. He walked off to the side, careful to not step too close. “He’s definitely dead with those gashes across this neck. Poor fellow.”

“Perhaps we should phone the constable,” McHayden said, emerging from under the scrub to the side. He must have headed around the tree rather than under it. He kept a wary eye on Willard’s branches.

“I’m texting him,” Io said, tapping on his phone. “Fortunately, the SatNav works this high up. The fae one isn’t always as accurate with grid coordinates.”

“Jake,” I said, sending a mental nudge.

“I thought you said the chap’s name was Brynmor, not Jacob?” McHayden looked puzzled.

“My dead boyfriend,” I said. This wasn’t the best time to break in an unfamiliar person on how I worked with ghosts. But I needed Jake’s help. He popped in with a few seconds.

“Hmm… You found another dead… um…”

“Goblin. Brynmor is a goblin.” I gestured around the clearing. “But I don’t see his ghost anywhere. Can you give a look about and see if he’s lost somewhere?”

“Sure, but not all spirits stay with their bodies,” Jakes said.
